BERLIN, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) -- Newly promoted Werder Bremen came from behind with three last-gasp goals in six minutes to shock Borussia Dortmund on the road in the third round of Bundesliga on Saturday.
The "BVB" started powerful on home turf, but couldn't do any damage to Bremen's well-adjusted defense in the opening stage.
Bremen grew into the game and created the first noteworthy chance of the match after Jens Stage headed a free kick over the target on 21 minutes.
The "Green-Whites" kept Dortmund's defense busy in the closing period of the first half as Marvin Ducksch and Niclas Fullkrug came close.
However, Dortmund broke the deadlock just before the halftime whistle when Julian Brandt stunned Bremen goalkeeper Jiri Pavlenka with a 17-meter hammer.
Dortmund staged a clinical chance conversion to double its advantage in the 77th minute, when Raphael Guerreiro beat Pavlenka from 20 meters.
Thorgan Hazard had the chance to triple Dortmund's lead, but the Belgian international rattled the post from a promising position in the 80th minute.
Bremen was rewarded in the 89th minute as substitute Lee Buchanan overcame goalkeeper Gregor Kobel with the outside of the boot to halve the deficit.
The "Green-Whites" sparked to life as Amos Pieper's cross into the box allowed Niklas Schmidt to restore parity in the injury time.
Ole Werner's men were still not done with the scoring and completed the comeback in the dying seconds of the game. Mitchell Weiser's through ball found Oliver Burke, who drilled the winner past Kobel into the near post corner from tight angle.
"It is brutally annoying when you're 2-0 up in the 88th minute," said Dortmund coach Edin Terzic.
Elsewhere, Bayer Leverkusen suffered its third straight defeat after losing 3-0 to ruthless Hoffenheim.
Vincenzo Grifo's goal was enough to secure Freiburg a narrow 1-0 victory over Stuttgart.
Goals from Karim Onisiwo and Lee Jae-sung helped Mainz reap its second win of the season 2-1 over Augsburg.
Wolfsburg shared the spoils with Schalke 04 after a goalless draw, and Union Berlin snatched a 2-1 win over Leipzig.
On Friday, Borussia Monchengladbach saw off Hertha Berlin 1-0 thanks to the winner from Alassane Plea. ■
