RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) -- Flamengo president Rodolfo Landim has revealed plans for a new stadium with a capacity to seat more than 100,000 fans.
President Rodolfo Landim did not provide details of the proposal but local media reported that club officials are negotiating the purchase of disused public land in the center of Rio de Janeiro.
"I'm looking for land. We're working on it. It will be a stadium that is able to hold at least 100,000 fans," newspaper O Globo quoted Landim as saying on Monday.
Flamengo currently play their home matches at the Maracana stadium alongside co-tenants Fluminense.
The Rio de Janeiro state government, which owns the Maracana, last month launched a tender process that seeks a new operator for the 79,000-seat venue. A 20-year concession contract is expected to be awarded in October. ■
