NEW DELHI, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) -- Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his Independence Day speech on Monday called on the Indian people to fight against corruption and nepotism.

"We have to wage a war against it. I seek the cooperation of 1.3 billion Indians in this fight against corruption," Modi said.

"When I talk of nepotism, I don't talk about politics only. Unfortunately, nepotism has plagued our institutions which in turn adversely affects the deserving talent," said the prime minister, adding that nepotism also is one of the reasons for corruption.

In his speech lasting over 80 minutes, Modi also praised the "immense contribution" of women in the construction of the country, and the development in the fields of science and technology.
