SAO PAULO, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) -- Palmeiras extended their lead at the top of Brazil's Serie A championship on Saturday with a 1-0 away victory over fellow title contenders Corinthians.
Roni Moura gifted the visitors the advantage by deflecting the ball into his own net while attempting to clear a cross in the 72nd minute.
Corinthians controlled most of the possession and had more shots on goal than their rivals but were unable to find a way past Palmeiras goalkeeper Weverton.
The result leaves Palmeiras with 48 points from 22 games, nine points ahead of Corinthians, who are second in the 20-team standings.
In other Brazilian Serie A fixtures on Saturday, Avai drew 1-1 at Goias, Cuiaba secured a 1-0 home win over Juventude and Atletico Goianiense held Botafogo to a goalless drew in Rio de Janeiro. ■
