SAO PAULO, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- Sao Paulo progressed to the Copa Sudamericana semifinals on Wednesday with a 4-3 penalty shootout victory over Brazilian rivals Ceara.

Midfielder Patrick converted the decisive spot-kick as the visitors kept alive their hopes of a first major trophy since 2012.

Earlier, Stiven Mendoza and Guilherme Castilho scored either side of an Igor Vinicius strike to hand hosts Ceara a 2-1 win on the night.

The result tied the overall score following Sao Paulo's 1-0 home win in last week's first leg.

The winner of the Copa Sudamericana - South America's equivalent of the Europa League - will earn an automatic berth in next year's Copa Libertadores.
