BEIJING, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Xie Feng on Thursday summoned Jim Nickel, charge d'affaires of the Canadian embassy in China, to lodge solemn representations and strong protest over the negative Taiwan-related statement issued by the G7 foreign ministers and the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.
China sternly condemns the G7 statement that confounds right and wrong, Xie said, adding that Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan gravely violated the one-China principle and the three China-U.S. joint communiques, severely impacted the political foundation of China-U.S. relations, seriously infringed upon China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, and seriously undermined peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.
The U.S. side has repeatedly challenged China's bottom line, undermined China's core interests, and escalated tensions, Xie said, adding that the United States is single-handedly responsible for the current situation and should bear the full responsibility.
The U.S. side initiated the provocations, while China was compelled to act in self-defense, which is legal and reasonable, Xie said, noting that instead of holding the United States accountable, the G7 has asked the Chinese side to exercise restraint. "This is flagrant logic of robbers," he said.
Xie said the G7 wantonly violated the international law and basic norms governing international relations centered on respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity, and blatantly violated the one-China principle confirmed in UNGA Resolution 2758, committed by 181 countries and widely observed by the international community.
China is determined to safeguard its sovereignty and territorial integrity and thwart foreign interferences in China's internal affairs, Xie said, adding that all attempts to connive at or support the "Taiwan independence" separatist forces are doomed to fail.
Noting that more than 100 countries and international organizations have reiterated their support for the one-China principle, the vice foreign minister said G7 is in no position to represent the international community, and should not stand against the 1.4 billion Chinese people, the vast majority of countries in the world and international justice.
China urges Canada to immediately correct its mistakes, respect the facts, stop engaging in bloc confrontation and cease wrong deeds on the Taiwan question, otherwise, all consequences will be borne by the Canadian side, Xie said. ■
