LONDON, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- Newcastle United confirmed on Friday that coach Eddie Howe has signed a new 'long term' contract at the club.

Howe joined Newcastle in November 2021 with the club deep in the relegation zone, shortly after their Saudi Arabian led takeover and guided the team to 11th in the Premier League, 14 points clear from the drop.

"It's a great feeling to commit my future to this incredible club. I'm extremely proud to be the head coach of Newcastle and have enjoyed every moment here."

"I'd like to take the opportunity to acknowledge my coaching team, the players, staff and supporters. They make it a very special place to be every day," said Howe, who has also coached Bournemouth.

Meanwhile Newcastle's Sporting Director Dan Ashworth said he was "delighted" Howe had "committed his long-term future to Newcastle United."

"He is an incredibly talented leader and has had a huge impact since being appointed in November and in the short period of time I have worked with him, I have seen how much of a diligent, detailed, hard-working coach and leader he is."

Newcastle kick off their Premier League campaign at home to newly-promoted Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

Friday also saw Chelsea confirm the signing of Brighton left back Marc Cucurella on a six-year contract in a deal worth around 55 million pounds (about 66.3 million U.S. dollars), plus a possible seven million more in add-ons.

The fee is around four times more than Brighton paid the Spanish La Liga side Getafe for the Barcelona youth system product a year ago.

"I'm really happy. It's a big opportunity for me to join one of the best clubs in the world and I'm going to work hard to be happy here and help the team," said Cucurella.
