AMMAN, July 26 (Xinhua) -- Jordan on Tuesday called for continued support as its burden of hosting Syrian refugees is growing, state-run Petra news agency reported.

Jordanian Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Nasser Shraideh made the remarks during a meeting with visiting Assistant High Commissioner for Operations of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Raouf Mazou.

Shraideh said Jordan has hosted more than 1.3 million Syrian refugees since 2011, which increased the burden on the country's budget, particularly on subsidized commodities and the water, education, health and energy sectors.

He called for direct support by the international community to help control the impact of the Syrian refugee crisis on the Jordanian economy.

For his part, Mazou expressed his appreciation for the coordination and cooperation of the Jordanian government, and reaffirmed the United nation's keenness to help, urging the international community to support Jordan in fulfilling its humanitarian role.
