YINCHUAN, July 25 (Xinhua) -- Zhongwei City of northwest China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region is located at the southeast edge of the Tengger Desert. To prevent desertification, local authorities have made various efforts through the decades.
Placing straw checkerboard sand barriers has been proved to be an effective method for sand control here over the past years. And part of the desert has been developed as tourism scenic areas.
Among the scenic areas, Shapotou desert-themed scenic spot in Zhongwei is a national 5A tourist attraction. By organizing summer vacation activities featuring desertification demonstration, Shapotou attracts students from across the country every year.
