Transsion, one of the leading Chinese manufacturers in Bangladesh, is running a handset assembly plant in Gazipur to brace for a larger share of Bangladesh's growing smartphone market. As a strong competitor in the Bangladeshi market, it sells well and creates abundant job opportunities for local people, as well as boosts the development of surrounding industries.

DHAKA, July 21 (Xinhua) -- Kohinoor Akhter Shikha never thought that someday she could make smartphones in her neighborhood well known as Bangladesh's textile industry hub.

This was a dream coming true for Shikha as a Chinese conglomerate built a mega mobile handset manufacturing plant near her home in Gazipur on the outskirts of Bangladeshi capital Dhaka in 2018.

"I'm very happy to be able to work here," said Shikha, a female worker of Transsion Bangladesh.

"Here both smart and button phones are made," Shikha told Xinhua recently.

To stay ahead of competition, Transsion is one of the leading Chinese manufacturers in Bangladesh that has been continuously working to introduce the right products for local consumers.

After ensuring a sizeable stake in the country's phone market within a short period of time since its inception, Transsion is running its handset assembly plant in Gazipur to grab a bigger share of Bangladesh's growing smartphone market.

The company officially started its journey in Bangladesh in 2017 and so far has managed to have a strong presence in both feature phone as well as smartphone segments. It is one of the major Chinese manufacturers that has its own assembly plant in Gazipur, located 25 km north of Dhaka, with its over 1,000-strong workforce, mostly female workers.

Once a textile manufacturing hub, Gazipur is now called a city of smartphones with local and foreign companies including leading Chinese manufacturers such as Transsion and Xiaomi employing thousands to work in their Gazipur plants.

FAST-GROWING BUSINESS

Transsion is selling well and has become a strong competitor in the Bangladeshi market.

Willy Cui, general manager of Transsion Bangladesh, said the local factory was officially put into operation in September 2018, producing and assembling Transsion's mobile phone products.

Currently, he said, Transsion has six production lines with an annual capacity of more than 5 million smartphones in the 6,500 square meter plant in Gazipur. The plant is quick to respond to the local market and provides more than 1,100 jobs.

In addition to promoting local employment and improving the skills of local industrial workers, Transsion also actively participates in the local community, he added.

The Chinese firm owns three mobile phone brands -- itel, TECNO and Infinix -- and already is the second largest player in the smartphone market in Bangladesh. With the growing business, Transsion has built a new factory in Narayanganj near Dhaka.

Mosammat Kamrunnahar works in the quality section of Transsion Bangladesh's plant. "I have a diploma in electrical and electronics and I'm very happy that I've got a job here," she said. "I'm very happy that they have created such a wonderful workplace."

AFTER-SALES SERVICE

Rezwanul Hoque, chief executive officer of Transsion Bangladesh, said hundreds of people work at Carlcare (the customer service brand of Transsion) across the country to meet after-sales needs. The firm has won a good reputation for its high-quality products, rapid response to the market and flexible production capacity.

He said the new plant has a total investment of 140 million RMB in the first phase, covering an area of more than 16,000 square meters. "Transsion is the largest foreign-invested enterprise in the economic zone," he added.

According to him, the new plant is expected to be ready for operation by the end of 2022 and will provide 2,500 local jobs.

"The opening of the new factory will also drive the development of surrounding industries," said Cui.
