BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, July 21 (Xinhua) -- Brunei Prince Haji Sufri Bolkiah, President of the Brunei Darussalam National Olympic Council urged all athletes to emulate the country's wushu medallists with long-term training schedules.

According to the local daily Borneo Bulletin on Thursday, the Prince said at the national flag handing-over ceremony for the Brunei contingent heading to the Commonwealth Games 2022 that persistent and continuous training and discipline can bring outstanding success.

Bruneian medallists proved this at the recent Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Hanoi, Vietnam, and national wushu athletes' success in the World Games 2022 in the United States, he said.

Led by Chinese coaches, Brunei's wushu athletes won one gold medal at the 31st SEA Games and grabbed one gold and one silver at the World Games 2022.

National sports associations and coaches "should have long-term training schedules and not just train when there is a competition," the Prince said.

"Continuous long-term training will help all parties especially in assessment and selection of athletes for overseas competitions, as well as ensuring they are always ready to represent the nation," he added.

Brunei will send a 12-member contingent to compete in lawn bowling and weightlifting events for the upcoming Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham, England.
