NAIROBI, July 19 (Xinhua) -- Kenya's Cabinet Secretary for Tourism and Wildlife Najib Balala on Tuesday announced the birth of twin giraffes at Nairobi National Park as efforts to save the iconic herbivore gathers steam.
Balala said in a twitter post that a Maasai giraffe had given birth to a set of twins, baffling conservationists and wildlife biologists alike since it was a very rare occurrence.
The Masai giraffes were born at the Nairobi National Park, a 117-square kilometer estate close to Kenya's capital city, local media reported on Tuesday.
According to Kenya Wildlife Service, the east African nation is home to three giraffe subspecies including the Maasai, the reticulated and the Rothschild, all grappling with human and climate induced threats. ■
