BAMYAN, Afghanistan, July 20 (Xinhua) -- A new water network has entered into operation to provide potable water to 400 households in Foladi valley in Afghanistan's central Bamyan province, provincial head of rural rehabilitation and development Ziahullah Khadem said Wednesday.

Built at a cost of nearly 1 million afghani (11,200 U.S. dollars) and operating with a solar power generating system, the network can also supply water to two schools and two mosques in the area, the official added.

Six more such projects at the cost of about 30 million afghanis (336,000 dollars) will begin the construction work in different parts of the undeveloped province in the next few weeks, the official said.

In the war-torn Afghanistan, many areas have no access to clean water, a situation often leading to the outbreak of some diseases like cholera.

In Kandahar and the neighboring Zabul and Helmand provinces, due to the lack of access to clean water and poor health services the outbreak of cholera has claimed over two dozen lives over the past couple of weeks.
