DUBLIN, July 18 (Xinhua) -- The temperature reached 33 degrees Celsius here on Monday afternoon, the highest on record in the city and the second highest in Ireland in 135 years, the National Meteorological Service (Met Eireann) said.

Multiple temperature records were also broken at various Met Eireann weather stations nationwide, with temperatures in the eastern and central parts of the country exceeding 30 degrees Celsius, more than 10 degrees above the long-term averages, the service said.

The highest temperature ever recorded in Ireland was 33.3 degrees Celsius in the southeastern city of Kilkenny in 1887, according to Met Eireann.

Experts said that Monday was expected to be the hottest day of the summer in Ireland and predicted that the heat wave will last for a couple of days only.

On Tuesday, temperatures are projected to range between 22 degrees Celsius and 27 degrees Celsius in the country.

So far, the heat wave has not caused serious droughts or wildfires, but local media have reported drowning incidents in recent days.

The country's water utility company Irish Water has imposed night-time restrictions in 15 central and southeastern areas as demand is skyrocketing, local media reported.
