EUGENE, United States, July 16 (Xinhua) -- Poland's Pawel Fajdek clinched his fifth consecutive world title in the men's hammer throw at the World Athletics Championships in Eugene, the United States, on Saturday.
The 33-year-old delivered the best throw of 81.98 meters on his third attempt, edging compatriot and reigning Olympic champion Wojciech Nowicki by 95 centimeters.
Norway's Eivind Henriksen finished third with 80.87m.
Fajdek immediately announced that he has set his sight on a sixth gold when the World Championships take place in Budapest next year.
"It is not a secret that I was aiming the new championships record," he said. "But the next year, it will be another chance in Budapest so I have the chance to prepare myself even better for this."
He added: "This was the competition which matters the most this year so I am glad that the major gold is in my hand for the fifth time. Now, we have to get back to do the next hard job towards the next championship."
Nowicki was happy with the silver and said: "I cannot be more satisfied despite the fact that I am taking silver this time." ■
