BUDAPEST, July 9 (Xinhua) -- Japan won two gold medals while Azerbaijan and Brazil each claimed one on the second day of the International Judo Federation (IJF) Grand Slam here on Saturday.

Japan's Megumi Horikawa won the women's 63kg by overcoming Polish Angelika Szymanska. The two bronze medals went to Anriquelis Barrios from Venezuela and Maylin Del Toro Carvajal from Cuba.

Another Japanese Saki Niizoe defeated German judoka Miriam Butkereit in the women's 70kg final, while Maria Perez from Puerto Rico and Barbara Matic from Croatia claimed the bronze.

Hidayat Heydarov, currently world No. 3 in the men's 73kg, put Azerbaijan on the medal table after beating top-ranked Lasha Shavdatuashvili from Georgia.

In the men's 81kg final, Brazilian Guilherme Schimidt, winner of the 2022 Antalya Grand Slam, defeated Saeid Mollaei from Azerbaijan for the title. Italy's Antonio Esposito and Nugzari Tatalashvili from the United Arab Emirates took the bronze.

The 10 Chinese athletes who participated in the second day's competition all failed to make finals after stopping in the first or second round.

Japan currently tops the medal tally, followed by Azerbaijan and Brazil.
