Cano put the hosts ahead in the 39th minute at the Maracana when he headed home from close range after Caio Paulista's floating cross. The Argentine striker has now scored 26 times in 41 appearances across all competitions this season.
Matheus Martins doubled the lead by side-footing home from the edge of the six-yard box after Matheus Martinelli's cross from the right flank.
Ceara reduced the deficit courtesy of a Luiz Otavio strike in the 93rd minute but Fluminense held on to claim their fourth consecutive league victory.
Elsewhere in Brazil's Serie A on Saturday, Bragantino scored four goals in 20 second-half minutes to secure a 4-0 home win over Avai. ■
