RIO DE JANEIRO, July 7 (Xinhua) -- Brazilian clubs Sao Paulo and Atletico Goianiense advanced to the Copa Sudamericana quarterfinals on Thursday with victories over Chile's Universidad Catolica and Paraguayan side Olimpia, respectively.
Sao Paulo prevailed 4-1 at home to wrap up an 8-3 overall win while Goianiense progressed 5-3 on penalties after the scores were tied at 2-2 overall.
In Argentina, Independiente del Valle secured their passage to the last eight by holding hosts Lanus to a goalless draw, a result that handed the Ecuadorian outfit a 2-1 win on aggregate.
The results mean Goianiense and Nacional of Uruguay will meet in the quarterfinals while Melgar will clash with Internacional.
In other fixtures, Deportivo Tachira will confront Independiente del Valle and Sao Paulo are slated to duel with Ceara.
The Copa Sudamericana is South America's second most prestigious club competition after the Copa Libertadores. ■
