More than 3 million people in Kenya have benefited from the implementation of a Chinese-funded project designed to promote maternal, newborn and child health in the East African Nation, according to UNICEF Kenya.

NAIROBI, July 3 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese Embassy in Kenya and the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) on Thursday held a ceremony to mark the successful completion of a China-funded project to promote maternal, newborn and child health in the East African Nation.

The project, with 1 million U.S. dollars in funding from the Chinese government, was implemented by UNICEF between Jan. 1, 2020, and Dec. 30, 2021, involving the procurement and distribution of medical equipment and medicines.

The successful completion of the project with desired results reflects sound cooperation between China and UNICEF under the framework of South-South Cooperation, said Chinese Ambassador to Kenya Zhou Pingjian, who signed the completion certificate.

The project offered medical materials and training to 159 health facilities in eight counties across Kenya, benefiting more than 3 million people, according to UNICEF Kenya.

With Chinese donation and support, UNICEF has been strengthening the construction of grassroots health facilities in Kenya and has effectively reduced the fatality rate of pregnant women and children during the COVID-19 pandemic, said Maniza Zaman, UNICEF representative in Kenya.
