MUMBAI, June 30 (Xinhua) -- India's southwestern state of Maharashtra has embroiled in a political crisis after its Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray announced resignation on Wednesday evening.
The resignation was a fallout of a floor test to be held in the state assembly at 11 a.m. local time on Thursday.
"I am resigning as the chief minister," Thackeray said in his address.
India's apex court ruled on Wednesday evening that the Thackeray-led government must prove it's majority on Thursday. But Thackeray opted to resign as the majority of the assembly did not favour him.
Thackeray lost majority in the assembly after around 39 members out of 55 members of his political party shifted allegiance as a separate group.
The Maharashtra assembly has a total of 288 seats and Thackeray's party Shiv Sena-led government ruled for the past 31 months in alliance with the Indian National Congress with 44 seats and the Nationalist Congress Party with 54 seats to be in the majority. ■
