BEIRUT, June 21 (Xinhua) -- Lebanon on Monday signed an energy import deal with Egypt to receive 650 million cubic meters of natural gas on an annual basis, Elnashra news website reported, citing the Lebanese energy minister.

The deal also involves Syria which will get 8 percent of the 650 million cubic meters gas per year, Walid Fayyad told a press conference in the capital Beirut.

The agreement was signed between the Lebanese energy ministry, the Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company and the Syrian Petroleum Company.

This will give Lebanon an additional power generating capacity of 450 megawatts, or four hours of power per day.

Deficits in Lebanon's electricity sector have cost the government more than 40 billion U.S. dollars since the end of the 1975-1990 civil war.

In September last year, Lebanese, Egyptian, Syrian and Jordanian energy ministers agreed to supply natural gas for generating electricity to Lebanon from Egypt via Jordan and Syria, after the United States agreed not to sanction its transfer in Syria.
