Uganda, Rwanda qualify for FIBA U18 African Championships

KAMPALA, June 19 (Xinhua) -- Uganda's women's and Rwanda's men's teams have qualified for the Federation of International Basketball Association (FIBA) Under 18 African Championship to take place in Madagascar.

The two teams came top during the FIBA U18 Zone V qualifiers that ended at the Lugogo Indoor Stadium in Kampala late Saturday.

Uganda's U18 women's team, the Gazelles, defeated Tanzania 63-43 in the deciding match on Saturday. Sylvia Nantongo scored a game-high 17 points for Uganda, while Getrude Nyamutoro and Mariam Namukwaya each notched ten points.

"We are very happy that after four games we have managed to win three and qualify for the FIBA U18 African Championship," Uganda coach Mavita Ali told Xinhua after the match.

Uganda started their campaign with a 71-50 win against Rwanda and followed it with a 64-36 victory against Tanzania. In their second face-off with Rwanda on Friday, the Gazelles lost 52-43.

In the U18 men's category, Rwanda were a class apart as they won all their four matches. They completed the championship with an 84-49 win against Tanzania in their final match on Saturday.

Rwanda head coach Yvwes Murenzi said they were happy to secure qualification for their fifth appearance at the U18 continental showcase since 2010.

The 2022 FIBA U18 African Championship will take place in Antananarivo, Madagascar between July 23 and August 1.
