NEW YORK, June 17 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. gun control laws are erected on a state-by-state basis, and sharing a border with a nation like the United States complicates gun violence issues in Canada, Spectrum News 1 reported Wednesday.

While gun violence is an issue in Canada, the magnitude of single shootings is greater in the United States because of semiautomatic weapons, according to the report.

"Guns are too easy to get in the United States," Jooyoung Lee, associate professor of sociology and faculty member at the Center for the Study of the United States, was quoted as saying.

"A lot of the injuries and deaths that we hear about could have been prevented if there were more common-sense laws in place," said Lee.
