ABUJA, June 16 (Xinhua) -- Nigeria's opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Thursday confirmed Ifeanyi Okowa, the incumbent governor of the oil-rich Delta state, as the running mate for Atiku Abubakar, the party's presidential candidate for next year's general election.
Okowa, a 62-year-old and two-term governor of Delta, said he accepted the nomination by Abubakar to work together to wrest power from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the forthcoming election.
Abubakar said his choice of running mate was particularly for being a fighter who cares about winning and good governance, among other presidential qualities.
"He personifies not only the seriousness the current moment represents for our country but also the future that our young people yearn for and deserve," said the PDP flagbearer.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had last week asked the country's political parties to officially complete the process of submitting their candidate's list by 6 p.m. local time on Friday, extending the window for the parties to shop for vice-presidential candidates. ■
