NAIROBI, June 16 (Xinhua) -- Hundreds of children have gathered at the Korogocho slum, one of the largest slums in Kenya to mark the International Day of the African Child which is celebrated on June 16 each year.
The 17-year-old Omar Hemed says he has been celebrating the day of the African Child for the last five years. He says with each year there are new lessons.
"I feel like the theme for this year, which is eliminating the harmful practices, is a really good theme. Because it is something that we as African children, are trying to destroy," said Omar.
The event was also marked by various activities to shed light on harmful practices affecting children.
Kenya introduced a free primary education program in 2003 which saw more than one million children join school.■
