DHAKA, June 8 (Xinhua) -- The FIFA World Cup trophy arrived in Bangladesh's capital Dhaka on Wednesday for a 36-hour tour, paving the way for soccer fans here to witness the game's most prestigious and glittering trophy.
A chartered flight, carrying the original FIFA World Cup trophy and a seven-member FIFA delegation studded with 1998 World Cup winner Christian Karembeu, landed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka at around 11:15 a.m. local time Wednesday.
Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) General Secretary Abu Nayeem Shohagh told journalists that BFF president Kazi Mohammad Salahuddin welcomed the trophy and the FIFA delegation at the airport.
He said that during the tour of Bangladesh, the trophy will be taken to the residences of Bangladeshi president and prime minister, among other places.
Also, a cultural program is slated to be held Thursday as the trophy will be displayed at a stadium for the public in Dhaka.
The global tour of the world's most coveted trophy started on May 12 with first-stop in Dubai.
The FIFA World Cup trophy earlier made its visit to Bangladesh in 2013 before Brazil World Cup 2014. ■
