KABUL, June 7 (Xinhua) -- A total of 2,086 families have received food assistance in four Afghan provinces, the Office of the State Minister for Disaster Management and Humanitarian Affairs said on Tuesday.
The food aid was distributed to destitute, deserved, and natural disaster-affected families in the northern Faryab, Samangan, Baghlan provinces, and in the southern Kandahar province on Monday, according to the agency's website.
The aid packages included flour, beans, cooking oil, sugar and fresh dates.
Much of the assistance was provided by international humanitarian agencies and the families were identified by surveys jointly conducted by provincial disaster officials and members of the aid agencies, according to the source.
More than 22 million Afghans out of some 35 million of the country's population are facing acute food shortages and the war-torn country would face a humanitarian catastrophe if not assisted, according to aid agencies' reports. ■
