Uganda defeats Djibouti to qualify for CECAFA Senior Women's Championship semifinals

BUIKWE, Uganda, June 5 (Xinhua) -- Uganda Crested Cranes have qualified for the semifinal stage at the ongoing CECAFA Senior Women's Championship 2022.

Coach George Lutalo's team defeated Djibouti 5-0 in a Group A match played on Friday at the FUFA Technical Center in Njeru in Buikwe Distric, Central Region, Uganda.

The win takes Uganda to six points after they won the opening match played on Wednesday 2-0 against Rwanda.

Aisha Nantongo and defender Margret Namirimu gave Uganda a 2-0 lead at halftime before Sandra Nabweteme, substitute Phiona Nabbumba and Fazila Ikwaput added more goals for the hosts.

In the second Group A match played, Burundi stopped a hard fighting Rwanda team 2-1 to also book a place in the semifinals.

Sandrine Niyonkuru netted a brace for Burundi, while Zawadi Usanase scored for Rwanda.

Tanzania and Ethiopia played out a 2-2 draw in a closely contested Group B encounter on Saturday at FUFA Technical Center.

In the other group B match, South Sudan labored to earn a 1-0 win over Zanzibar thanks to Debora Stephen Luka.

The regional tournament which kicked off on June 1 will climax on June 11th with the final and play-off for third place.
