The first highway across the Taklimakan, China's largest desert, has now achieved zero-carbon emissions.

The highway runs 522 km in Xinjiang, connecting Lunnan in the north, with Minfeng county in the south.

It was inaugurated in 1995.

On Thursday, a "zero-carbon" project was launched on the highway, with solar panels employed to generate electricity to pump water for irrigating trees.

The Taklimakan, dubbed the "sea of death," is one of the largest deserts in the world and known for its harsh landscape.
