TEHRAN, May 19 (Xinhua) -- An Iranian government spokesman said Wednesday a new UN report on the profound humanitarian impact of U.S. sanctions on Iran reveals "another disgrace to the United States."

Ali Bahadori-Jahromi made the remarks in a tweet when UN Special Rapporteur Alena Douhan finished her 12-day visit to Iran and briefed on how the unilateral coercive measures impact Iranians' human rights.

Douhan said on Wednesday that decades of U.S. sanctions have wholly affected Iranian people's lives and have particularly hit the low-income section of Iran's society.

While presenting the assessment, Douhan called on the United States to abandon its hard-nosed policy of maximum pressure against Iran and other countries.

The UN official has confirmed that the U.S. measures against Iran violate international law and human rights principles, said Bahadori-Jahromi.

Iran has long been a target of U.S. unilateral sanctions, which have intensified since 2018 when former U.S. President Donald Trump pulled his country out of the 2015 nuclear deal, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, between Tehran and world powers.
