JERUSALEM, May 17 (Xinhua) -- The Israeli army said a Palestinian man was "neutralized" on Tuesday after attempting to stab Israeli soldiers at a military checkpoint in the West Bank.

The incident took place near the entrance to the Palestinian city of Nablus, one of the major cities in the occupied West Bank.

"An assailant armed with a knife charged toward soldiers stationed in the area," the Israeli army said in a statement.

The "responded with live fire and neutralized the assailant," the army added.

Israel's Ynet news site reported that the suspect sustained serious injuries and was taken to the Beilinson Hospital in central Israel.

No injuries were reported among Israeli soldiers.

The violence came amid rising regional tensions, including clashes at the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in East Jerusalem, a series of Palestinian attacks in Israel and Israeli raids in the West Bank.

Israel captured the West Bank in a 1967 war and has kept controlling the territory despite international condemnations.
