New Zealand's accumulated community cases of COVID-19 surpass 1 mln

New Zealand's accumulated community cases of COVID-19 surpassed the 1-million mark on May 10.

WELLINGTON, May 11 (Xinhua) -- New Zealand has reported 1,009,876 confirmed cases of COVID-19 since the beginning of the pandemic in early 2020, including 7,970 recorded on Wednesday.

On Tuesday, the country reported a total of 1,001,898 COVID-19 infections in communities, surpassing the 1-million mark.

The confirmed community cases have taken up nearly one-fifth of the country's total population of 5,127,200.

On Wednesday, New Zealand also reported 28 more deaths from the pandemic. Among the new community infections, 2,633 were reported in the largest city Auckland, the health ministry said in a statement.

In addition, 77 new cases of COVID-19 were detected at the New Zealand border.

Currently, 381 COVID-19 patients are being treated in New Zealand hospitals, including 10 people in intensive care units or high dependency units.

New Zealand is currently under the orange settings of its COVID-19 Protection Framework, where there is no limit for gatherings.
