RIO DE JANEIRO, April 28 (Xinhua) -- Veteran manager Abel Braga has parted ways with Fluminense after just four months in charge, the Brazilian Serie A club said on Thursday.
The announcement came less than two days after Fluminense were held to a goalless home draw by Argentina's Union Santa Fe in the Copa Sudamericana group phase.
"Abel Braga and the Fluminense board met this morning with the squad to communicate the decision, by mutual agreement, to follow a new path," read a statement on the Rio de Janeiro side's website.
It added that assistant coach Marcao Oliveira would assume the vacant position on an interim basis.
Braga led Fluminense to 17 wins, four draws and five losses in his fourth spell in charge of the club.
He was also in charge of Fluminense in 2005, from 2011 to 2013 and in the 2017-2018 season. The 69-year-old guided the Rio de Janeiro side to the Brazilian Serie A title in 2012, the club's most recent top flight triumph.
Braga entered management in 1985 following a successful playing career that included spells with Fluminense, Vasco da Gama, Las Vegas Quicksilvers, Paris Saint-Germain, Cruzeiro, Botafogo and Goytacaz.
Fluminense are currently 13th in the 20-team Brazilian Serie A standings with four points from their first three matches. ■
