NANNING, April 27 (Xinhua) -- The city of Guilin in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region Monday released about 30,000 fish fry into the Lijiang River, a primary element of the local signature scenery.

Monday marks the city's first "Lijiang River protection day," and the local government has set up a special ecological and environmental protection branch of its public security bureau. It will cooperate with the existing branch in charge of the Lijiang River scenic area to increase the protection of the river basin.

Indigenous species are among the newly-hatched fish, including grass carp and common carp, aiming to help purify the river's ecological environment and maintain the local ecosystem balance, said the local authorities.

Hailed as one of the most beautiful rivers on Earth, the Lijiang River, where clean water flows between the scenic karst mountains, winds through four counties in Guilin. It has not only been mentioned in Chinese textbooks but also appears on the back of China's 20-yuan banknote.

China has been making continuous efforts to better protect the ecological environment of the picturesque river amid its construction of an ecological civilization system.
