ABUJA, April 19 (Xinhua) -- At least five people returning from a wedding ceremony in south Nigeria's Anambra state have been kidnapped at gunpoint by unidentified gunmen, the police said on Tuesday.
About 15 persons who were returning home from a wedding ceremony were intercepted by the gunmen late Monday on the Akpo-Nkpologwu road in the Aguata local government area of the state, and at least five of them were taken away, said Toochukwu Ikenga, a spokesman for the police in that state, in a statement.
The police have launched a rescue operation to ensure that the victims were safely reunited with their families unhurt, said Ikenga.
Sources quoted by local media as saying the wedding guests were in a convoy of three vehicles, and the gunmen had asked all the women to go and took five of the men away after shooting into the air. ■
