ABIDJAN, April 19 (Xinhua) -- President Alassane Ouattara of Cote d'Ivoire on Tuesday appointed Tiemoko Meyliet Kone, the governor of the Central Bank of West African States (BCEAO), as the vice president of the Republic of Cote d'Ivoire.

President Ouattara made the announcement during the speech on the state of the nation delivered Tuesday in Yamoussoukro, the de jure capital of Cote d'Ivoire about 230 km from Abidjan, the country's economic capital.

Tiemoko Meyliet Kone, born in 1949, was renamed BCEAO governor on Aug. 17, 2020, for the second term of six years by the Conference of Heads of State and the West African Monetary Union (UMOA). The BCEAO is based in Dakar, Senegal.

Created in 2016, the position of vice-president had been vacant since the resignation of Daniel Kablan Duncan in July 2020. In accordance with the Constitution of Cote d'Ivoire, the vice president replaces the president when the latter is outside the national territory.
