The Confucius Institute at the University of Nairobi in Kenya has held a Chinese language quick learning challenge in celebrating the UN Chinese Language Day observed annually on April 20.
NAIROBI, April 19 (Xinhua) -- The Confucius Institute at the University of Nairobi in Kenya has held a Chinese language quick learning challenge in celebrating the UN Chinese Language Day observed annually on April 20.
Teachers of the Confucius Institute through the event taught the pronunciation of Chinese characters to students who were excited about the opportunity to know more about the Chinese language and culture.
During the activity, the teachers also taught some short sentences in spoken Chinese to the curious students. The unique experience has made them more interested in learning Chinese Mandarin.
Language is a tool to facilitate communication. Currently, standard Chinese is growing into a popular language course in Kenya.
The Confucius Institute at the University of Nairobi (UoN), a collaboration between the UoN and China's Tianjin Normal University, was the first Confucius Institute established in Africa. The two universities have also established a collaborative link that includes the exchange of students and lecturers.■
