SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir, April 14 (Xinhua) -- Police in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir said on Thursday that they killed four militants in a gunfight in the region.

The gunfight, according to the police, erupted in Badigam-Zainapora area of Shopian district, about 60 km south of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"Today a gunfight between militants and joint contingents of police, paramilitary and army started at Badigam-Zainapora. In the exchange of fire between the two sides, four militants were killed," a police official said.

The identity of the slain militants was not immediately known.

Meanwhile, police said two troopers were killed and two others injured after a vehicle carrying them to the gunfight site overturned.

A guerrilla war is going on between militants and Indian troops stationed in the region since 1989.

Kashmir, the Himalayan region divided between India and Pakistan, is claimed by both in full. Since their independence from Britain, the two countries have fought three wars, two exclusively over Kashmir.
