Macao's merchandise trade continues to rise in February

MACAO, March 30 (Xinhua) -- Macao's total merchandise import went up by 38.7 percent year on year to 10.56 billion patacas (about 1.31 billion U.S. dollars) in February 2022, while merchandise export amounted to 1.01 billion patacas, up 39.2 percent year on year, the special administrative region (SAR)'s statistical service said on Wednesday.

The latest report from Macao's Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) showed that the merchandise trade deficit totaled 9.54 billion patacas in February.

For the first two months of this year, total value of merchandise import expanded by 35.7 percent year on year to 24.61 billion patacas while total merchandise export increased by 13.4 percent to 2.45 billion patacas, showed the report.

Analyzed by place of origin, merchandise import from the European Union (EU) and the Chinese mainland in the first two months of 2022 rose by 59.3 percent and 8.2 percent year on year to 9.33 billion patacas and 7.01 billion patacas respectively.

Analyzed by destination, merchandise export to the mainland dropped by 26.5 percent year on year to 175 million patacas. Exports to the Hong Kong SAR, the United States and the EU rose by 17.9 percent, 22.5 percent and 30.5 percent year on year respectively.

External merchandise trade totaled 27.06 billion patacas from January to February, up 33.3 percent from a year earlier. (1 pataca equals 0.1241 U.S. dollars)
