BARCELONA, March 22 (Xinhua) -- The Bahrain Victorious cycling team on Tuesday gave a positive update on the health of sprinter Sonny Colbrelli on Tuesday morning after fears about the Italian's health.
In dramatic scenes, Colbrelli passed out almost immediately after finishing second following an uphill sprint at the end of the 171-kilometer first stage of the Volta de Catalunya (Tour of Catalonia) cycle race on Monday.
He was given a heart massage in an ambulance and then taken to hospital in the nearby city of Girona for further tests amid rumors that he had suffered a heart attack.
Bahrain Victorious explained in the evening that he was "in stable condition upon being taken into an ambulance to Hospital Universitari de Girona to investigate his condition further."
The team issued a further update on Tuesday explaining that the 31-year-old was "conscious and feeling okay. He has since been in touch with family and friends as he recovers at the hospital."
"Sonny Colbrelli will undergo further tests today to discover the cause of yesterday's incident. All cardiac tests carried out last night showed no signs of concern or compromised functions," explained Bahrain Victorious.
The first stage of the Volta de Catalonya was won by the Australian, Michael Matthews (Team BikeExchange), who will be in the leader's jersey for Tuesday's second stage which crosses the border into France to finish in Perpignan. ■
