COLOMBO, March 20 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka will start setting up 2.2 million home gardens countrywide from next month, said a state minister here on Sunday.
The home gardens will be established under a program called "For a green Country", with the aim of increasing the production of fruits and vegetables, said Shehan Semasinghe, state minister of Samurdhi, Household Economy, Micro Finance, Self-Employment and Business Development.
The government has already provided 12,912 low income families with fruit and vegetable plants for setting up home gardens, said Semasinghe.
According to the state minister, the project was proposed by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. ■
