DAR ES SALAAM, March 7 (Xinhua) -- Tanzania exported 5,362.9 tons of meat worth 22,442,111.96 U.S. dollars between July 2021 and January 2022, the Minister for Livestock and Fisheries, Mashimba Ndaki, said on Monday.

"An increase of 200 percent in meat exports is good news for the country and meat producers who are looking ahead for a brighter future," Ndaki told a news conference in the capital Dodoma.

He attributed the impressive meat exports to improved policies and strategies in the meat industry put forward by the administration of President Samia Suluhu Hassan.

Ndaki said the meat was exported to the Comoros, Saudi Arabia, Vietnam, Qatar, China, Bahrain, Kuwait and Oman.

On milk production, Ndaki said milk processing factories increased to 105 from 99 during the period under review, producing a total of 207,951 liters a day.

He said production of leather goods has also improved tremendously following the construction of more than two state-of-the-art leather factories.

According to the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries, Tanzania currently has 33.4 million head of cattle, 21.29 million goats and 5.65 million sheep.
