YAOUNDE, March 1 (Xinhua) -- Former Cameroonian football star Rigobert Song was named as coach of the Cameroon national team on Monday.
The country's Minister of Sports and Physical Education Narcisse Mouelle Kombi said on Monday night that Song was appointed on the "high instructions" of President Paul Biya.
Song replaces Tony Conceicao, who led Cameroon into the play-offs of the FIFA World Cup African Qualifiers and guided the team to third place at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations on home soil.
The Indomitable Lions' playoff against Algeria in late March will determine which of the two sides will qualify for the World Cup. ■
