BEIJING, March 1 (Xinhua) -- Chinese researchers have developed a polygenic risk score model for primary prevention of coronary artery disease (CAD).

Using a meta-analytic approach and large genome-wide association results for CAD and CAD-related traits among 260,000 East Asians, the researchers developed a polygenic risk score comprising 540 genetic variants.

They further assessed the risk stratification for CAD integrating the guideline-recommended clinical risk score in large prospective groups comprising 41,271 individuals.

Individuals with a high polygenic risk score had about a three-fold higher risk of CAD than those with low polygenic risk, according to the study, with the lifetime risk of 15.9 and 5.8 percent, respectively.

For those with high polygenic risk who also had a family history of CAD, the lifetime risk could reach 27.7 percent, China Science Daily reported Tuesday.

The incorporation of polygenic risk into clinical care setting may provide valuable risk stratification guidance to identify high-risk individuals for targeted intervention in primary prevention of CAD.

The research article was published in the European Heart Journal.
