MACAO, Feb. 28 (Xinhua) -- A total of 515,000 guests checked into Macao's hotels and guesthouses in January 2022, up 14.2 percent year on year, the special administrative region's (SAR) statistics department said on Monday.
The latest report from the Statistics and Census Service showed that the average occupancy rate of guest rooms for January 2022 was 44.0 percent, a year-on-year growth of 3.7 percentage points.
However, the rate represented a month-on-month drop of 10.8 percentage points as the number of overnight visitors declined by 38.1 percent in January 2022 from December 2021 amid tightened border control between Macao and its neighboring mainland city of Zhuhai.
Guests from the Chinese mainland increased by 10.8 percent year on year to 418,000 in January 2022 while the number of local guests jumped 40.5 percent to 68,000, showed the report. At the beginning of this year, the Macao SAR government continued rolling out package tours for local residents at subsidized prices aiming to boost the local economy.
The average length of stay of guests grew by 0.1 night year on year to 1.8 nights.
In January, over 2,000 visitors joined local tours and a total of 7,000 Macao residents purchased outbound services, such as transport ticket bookings, accommodation and visits to tourist attractions, through travel agencies.
A total of 118 hotels and guesthouses offered accommodation services to the public in January, a decrease of one year on year. The number of available guest rooms increased 9.1 percent to 39,000. ■
