BEIJING, Feb. 19 (Xinhua) -- Juan Antonio Samaranch Jr. was elected as vice president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in the 139th IOC session here on Saturday. His term will start on May 20.
Juan Antonio Samaranch Jr., son of former IOC president Juan Antonio Samaranch, joined the IOC in 2001, serving as a member of IOC Executive Board between 2012 and 2016, and IOC vice president from 2016 to 2020.
The 62-year-old currently serves as the Chairman of the IOC Coordination Commission for Beijing 2022.
The total number of IOC members now stands at 106.
The 139th IOC session also elected Mumbai, India to become the host of the IOC session in 2023. The IOC session will go back to India 40 years after its 86th edition, which took place in New Delhi in 1983. ■
