BERLIN, Feb. 6 (Xinhua) -- Bayern Munich custodian Manuel Neuer will be sidelined for several weeks after undergoing knee surgery, the German record champions announced via the club's official homepage on Sunday.

Bayern's No. 1 successfully underwent surgery on his right knee joint and will be out of action for the upcoming weeks.

"All of us at the club and the whole team wish Manuel a speedy recovery. We are sure that he will soon be in top form with us again," Bayern Munich's sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic said.

The 35-year-old goalie has large shares on Saturday's 3-2 victory over resilient Leipzig after diffusing five promising opportunities to equal Oliver Kahn's Bundesliga record of 310 league wins.

Neuer said via his social media account that "everything went so well" that he can start with the "rehabilitative training within a narrow time frame".

For now, backup goalkeeper Sven Ulreich will stand between the posts. The Bundesliga front runners clash with newly-promoted Bochum at the 22nd round in Bundesliga on February 12 before they clash with RB Salzburg in UEFA Champions League's last 16 four days later. ■
