WARSAW, Feb. 1 (Xinhua) -- The Polish Olympic Committee said on Tuesday that the Polish short track speed skater Natalia Maliszewska is in isolation after she tested positive for COVID-19.
The world bronze medalist from 2018 is considered as a candidate to stand on the Olympic podium. However, the first days in Beijing turned out to be difficult for the 26-year-old as she was infected with coronavirus.
"When I was informed that my result was positive, I was confused. I didn't know how, why and so on. But then I wrote to the trainer that even if it would take me a few days, I still have a chance to start in the 500-meter race," Maliszewska said in an interview for a Polish local TV.
"I stick to the fact that I have a lot of time and try not to worry about it, because I know that stress lowers immunity. I try to think positively, even though I had a very hard night," Maliszewska added.
The speed skater emphasized that she is mentally ready to compete.
"I packed my suitcase for the competition here. So if they let me out even an hour before the start, I only have to change my jacket, shoes and I'm ready to go straight to the ice rink. I even have my flag here. I want to show them that my shape won't be disturbed by the coronavirus," Maliszewska concluded.
On Feb. 5, short track speed skaters will compete in the mixed team relay, while the women's 500m race is scheduled for Feb. 7. ■
