LJUBLJANA, Jan. 26 (Xinhua) -- Slovenia logged a new daily record of 17,491 COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, up from a previous record of 14,165 cases reached last Saturday, the National Institute of Public Health said.
The institute said that the cumulative number of active COVID-19 cases in the country of 2.1 million people was 136,355.
Despite the high figures, the government had decided against a new national lockdown arguing that it would hurt the economy. Kindergartens and schools are also open, but students must stay home for seven days if 30 percent of them came in contact with a COVID-19 case within 14 days.
The wearing of face masks remains mandatory in all indoor public spaces, which can only be entered by those who have been fully vaccinated, have recently overcome COVID-19 or have tested negative.
To date, only 57.5 percent of Slovenia's citizens have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19, according to official figures. ■
