KANDAHAR, Afghanistan, Jan. 25 (Xinhua) -- The construction work for two flood protection canals has been launched in Afghanistan's southern province of Kandahar, a provincial official said Tuesday.
The canals mark the first largest project in Kandahar since the Taliban's takeover of Afghanistan in mid-August 2021, and their construction is expected to provide job opportunities for about 1,000 people for a six-month period in the province, provincial official Zamaray Sargand told Xinhua.
"Funded by the World Food Programme (WFP), the project was recently applied by the Kandahar provincial municipality," said the official.
The two canals of 1,300 meters and 950 meters in their respective lengths will serve to protect several residential areas and villages from seasonal floods in a district of the provincial capital Kandahar city, according to Sargand. ■
